History: From my research, I've learned that Carl Zeiss (1816-1888) began making microscopes in Jena , Germany in 1846. His son continued the business using the business name Carl Zeissâe. Rudolf Winkel began making microscopes in 1857 in Gottingen , Germany . The Carl Zeiss Co. became the major shareholder of the Winkel Co. in 1911. Carl Zeiss had many subsidiaries: telescopes, cameras, binoculars, projection systems, etc. The Winkel-Zeiss Gottinger microscopes and the Carl Zeiss-Jena microscopes appear to be very similar with interchangeable parts, but different manufacturing locations. The current company is huge and most products used in today's cameras and microscopes are just marked Zeiss.
Other Observations : The wooden case has a leather handle and a lock with key. The leather handle is worn/broken on one end. The case holes to accept lens cases, eyepieces and misc. items. The case is complete with its two wooden microscope felt lined securing pieces. I hope you really enjoy owning this fine microscope. Good luck with your bidding. Check out my other neat items.
