This is a monumental historic piece for the lover of antiques, architecture and opera.
Provenance: Part of the interior ceiling designed by Carrere & Hastings. Condition: Overall good c...ondition with some cracking, flaking, and chipping consistent and with age, use, and manner in which removed from original setting.
From our research the Putti was part of the ceiling decoration. There are photographs in the library of congress which show details of the ceiling and the various putti. During demolition in 1966 people were allowed to take souvenirs of the decorations as a momenta. This piece was obtained from such a person. If you google Old Metropolitan Opera House in NYC you will find any numbers of articles and lots of photographs to include the putti's or cherubs around the ceiling. Also the National Library of Congress has lots of photographs. This is a piece of history. Could be restored or mounted as it. It is a magnificent sculpture.
