Up for auction is a large and tall, Rare first period, English Sinumbra lamp base of glass and bronze or brass.By our research, we have determined that this lamps production was C.1825 and definitely English.Very likely a piece made or retailed by Messenger & Phipson or Thomas Messenger shortly after he struck out on his own. This lamp was electrified at one point in its life, but we have removed it’s old wiring and the non-period, make shift shade holder that it had in plac...e.We are selling this as a Sinumbra base only. It also had (non-period) bun feet added, we believe to assist it in it’s electrification period, making space below it’s plinth for a electrical cord passage out and under the plinth. We will include these removed bun feet in case someone would like to electrify the base again. This lamp base is pictured in the book, 19th Century Elegant Lighting, Argand, Sinumbra, and Solar Lamps - By Gerald Gowitt. It is a Schiffer book for collectors. The lamp pictured on page 213, -though clearly the same maker and nearly identical cast features, it’s column is a clear glass column with a silvered tube in side and the lamp. Our lamps current through rod assembly is now a modern 1/8” lamp straight thread rod, most likely swapped from what would have been a thinner solid threaded rod in the period. The lamps air vent at the top of the drip cup, - is currently not soldered in place. It shows signs, that it was once soldered in place. Now held in place via it’s threaded rod. The beautiful Tiffany blue glass column had a broke out section at the top where it meets the columns when we first took ownership of it.It since has been hard epoxy filled and a matching color acrylic paint has been used to restore and blend the color to the back side of the column. We will be showing before and after pictures of where the surface was restored. We believe this possibly happened during an earlier disassembly and reassembly for an electrification process, as the blue column seems to also show signs of some surface cracks. They have not led to the glass coming apart, as we have had this base completely apart to check it’s internals, and they seem to be only surface cracks. We are mentioning the cracks, even though you don’t seem to really notice them from the front Until pointed out and with extreme bright light over exposing. This is a great base for someone to either enjoy as is or restore with additional found component like a tank, chimney, shade and burner. The bases base, (minus it’s bun feet) measures 22-1/2” tall to the top of the air drafts vent and 6-1/8” wide at it’s plinth.
