Calligraphy writing on top of scroll. This scroll has a bottom round bakelite resin dowel, and the top has a silk damask covered 1/2 round dowel. The style of scroll is ofancient form and is rarely used in modern embroidery. The colors used intraditional Chinese silk threads are all mineral pigments dye. This use of mineral pigments is the reason that many very oldChinese embroideries, like this one shown here from the 19th Century, still have strong, vibrant colors. The brush used inChinese painting and calligraphy usually has a long handle made of wood orbamboo, while some fancy brush handles can be ceramic, jade or lacquer. Animalhairs in a variety of combinations are used. The tips can be long or short, thick or thin, stiff or soft, or stiff outer hairs can surround softer interiorhairs – all depending on the desired effect.Condition: This oriental scroll is in good periodcondition with no major repairs of restorations. Very little age imperfections, Some small creases, no toning patina, some fading to silk, no damage, no stains on embroidery. The outside fabric has some small stains, not the inside of scroll where the embroidery is. That does not affect its integrity or the price and displays well. Within the last 20 years or so, this 19thcentury scroll appears to have been expertly remounted on a fabric/silk damaskbacking to protect this classic work.
The new backing allows this scroll to be hung, but at nine + feet long, itis best viewed as a hand scroll to enjoy its beauty and to protect the delicatepainting from light, wear, and moisture. Chinese scrollformats also allow for scrolls to be remounted periodically – every 100 or200 years, even longer depending on wear, storage conditions, etc. This isoften a time-consuming process that requires all the layers of backing paper tobe meticulously removed layer by layer until the scroll proper is free fromany backing. The scroll is allowed to rest, and then new layers of backingare applied. This process can take many months, even up to year to complete. However, remounting will protect the scroll for another long period oftime.
A fine scroll and worthy addition to one's collection.
