This antique Chinese Manchu blue silk embroidered butterfly peony formal court robe dates from the late 19th century during the Qing Dynasty. It is made of a dark midnight blue color silk fabric with blue ombre raised padded satin stitch hand embroidery work butterflies and colorful em...broidered peony flowers with Peking knot accents. The butterfly represents long life, young love and the peony flower is a symbol of love. affection and representative of good luck. There are embroidered diagonal stripes signifying water with rolling waves for the sea and tall mountain peaks along the bottom. This magnificent Manchu court officials formal robe has a long, loose fitting, open front surcoat style, with long full sleeves, white silk sleeve band cuffs with colorful finely done hand embroidery work of flowers, butterflies, side slit vents, a mandarin band collar, round carved brass buttons with black silk knotted toggle closures and is fully lined in a blue silk fabric with calligraphy Chinese characters inside the front opening. The robe measures 43 inches long, with a 48 inch chest, 48 inch waist and 14 inch wide sleeve band cuffs. It is in good condition, with only some restitching inside the collar (see close-up). This is truly a wonderful piece of Chinese wearable art!
