Gunto mountings from WorldWar 2. The blade represents the opportunity to own an original hand-made Gendaito katana by the well-knownwar-era swordsmith Mumemitsu. Theblade and the mountings are in Excellentcondition. The sword is healthy, meaty, and has a blade length of 25.75 inches(66cm). It features a well-grained itamehada, or wood-grain patterned surface steel. The hamon is a very attractive Soshustyle notare hamon mixed with suguhahamon. The hamon is present the length of the blade through the kissakiwhere it ends in a well-defined maruboshi. There are activities in and around the hamon like yubashiri and tobiyaki. Theblade is gendaito and traditionallymade.The tang is signed DewaGassan Munemitsu and dated Showa jyuhachi nen ichi gatsu, or January 1943. Munemitsuwas a respected Rikugun Jumei Tosho smith known for making high grade gendaito.The mountings are 1944 Type 3 Shin Gunto, sometimes referredto as NLF mountings. They are in Excellent condition. The tsuka islacquered cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. The tsuba is black with threeaccompanying seppa. The saya (scabbard) is lacquered black with a coarsefinish. It is in Near MINT condition with just a few small spotsof missing finish, retaining roughly 97-98%original finish. There is a locking mechanism present. The blade is in Excellent condition. There is one very smallmicro nick, a very few small areas of scattered rust, and a few scratches alongthe blades length. There are no major flaws like hagire. Given the condition ofboth sword and fittings, the reputation of the swordsmith, and the high degreeof craftsmanship displayed, I highly recommend this piece for a collector of WW2militaria or Japanese swords.Terms and additional items: This item is original and not aknockoff or fake.
