George III Solid Sterling Silver Nutmeg Grater.
DescriptionA very handsome Georgian silver nutmeg grater, London 1805.This example is particularly large and heavy.Of plain, rounded rectangular form, with hinged lid and base.Engraved with crest and motto to lid.Motto reads: AUT NON TENTES AUT PERFICELoosely translates as; either don't attempt it, or do it!Hallmarked to underside of lid for Thomas Phipps & Edward Robinson, London 1805. Further marked with lion pass and a...nd makers mark to hinged base.A high quality piece of Georgian silver, excellent size and weight.
ConditionIn antique condition with expected wear.With minor dings, scratches & surface wear throughout.Small split to silver at edge of grater (pic 9).Angraving to lid has come through near hallmarks (pic. 10)Hallmarks are clear and legible.
