Hello...fresh to the market, from an estate in Salem, MA, here is an extremely rare and very unusual antique FOSTER-HILSON figural cigar advertising plate/ashtray, most likely circa the turn of the 19th century; 1890s to early 1900s.Measuring about 6" across, this scalloped porcelain plate is in near pristine condition; without cracks, chips or repairs. The surface is shiny and bright, with very little if any visible crazing. The previously gilded edge shows some loss to the gold paint....The lettering reads as shown, but the piece de resistance of this quirky and wonderful advertising piece is the applied, hand sculpted cigar figure which is securely affixed to the center of the plate . The cigar has a finely detailed white, red and gold painted label which reads "Foster-Hilson Hoffman House Bouquet New York". A miniature sculpture of the actual cigar! The brown lettering is 99% fine on the plate. Marked on the under side, the maker MARX & GUTHERZ, CARLSBAD, AUSTRIA, and hand numbered by the artist: 2547 23.
