In the past it was generally believed that Ichihara Nagamitsu and Chounsai Emura blades were the work of the same swordsmith. New evidence and translations by Chris Bowen and others confirms that they are different and unrelated swordsmiths. During World War II a swordsmith named Chounsai Emura (real name: Emura Shigetato), originally from Tokushima in Shikoku, operated a swordmaking school on the grounds of the Okayama Prison. He made sword blades himself and also trained prisoners to make sword blades in support of the Japanese war effort. Emura san died in 1960. He made numerous very good blades which are now much sought after by collectors and students of the Japanese sword.Emura blades have received Hozon origami from the NBTHK in Japan. Emura blades have also received Shinteisho and Kanteisho origami from the NTHK(3). Based on the shapeand workmanship, the sword looks to be from a school like the Hosokawaschool which was active in the 1800s and worked in a variety of styles.The blade comes in original high-quality Samurai mountings. They are in Near MINT condition. Thetsuka features a ribbed design blended with a same wrap in the middle. Thetanto is mounted aikuchi style without a tsuba. The blade represents the rare opportunity to own a historic Koto wakizashi from the 1500rsquos by the famousswordsmith Bishu Sukesada. The blade is in Near MINT condition and the mountings are in Excellentcondition.... The sword has a blade length of 17.5 inches (45cm). The sword iswell-constructed showing an itamehada that mixes with a burl mokumehada. The hamon is a Bizen-style chojimidare with small gunome mixedin. The hamon is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a midare boshi that has some hakikake.There are activities like sunagashiand ashi in and along the hamon.The tang is signed BishuOsafune Sukesada and dated Daiei Ni NenHachi Gatsu Hi, or a day in Fall, 1522. Bishu Sukesada reflects a long line of smiths working in Bizenprovice from ca. 1500-1870 that are well-known and respected. They were knownfor making many swords to supply sides in the Japanese civil wars of the 1500s.This looks to be a generation from the height of Sukesada workmanship, but I can notconfirm which specific generation and a Shinsa would need to weigh in as finalauthority. The blade comes in original high-quality Samurai mountings. They are in Excellent condition. Thetsuka has a silk ito wrapping. There is some light fraying at the top andevidence of a small repair. The tsuba is shakudowith two seppas. The saya (scabbard) is a high quality lacquered black with a rareand desirable painting on thesaya in maki-e lacquer technique. Itis in Near MINT condition and theworkmanship on the painting, of fruits and butterflies, is outstanding.It shows some scratches and a few small areas of missing finish, retaining 97-98 original finish. Thesaya also has a kozuka utility knife. The blade is in Near MINT condition. It shows no nicks, very few scattered small spots of rust, and a few small scratches along its length. The blade and the fittingsare in Near MINT cond...itionincluding a RARE sayawith double hangers. It is ahealthy sword and has a blade length of 27 inches (68cm). It is also a beefysword with a wide mihaba of 3.5cm. The hada is a well-grained itame that mixes with a straight masame along the edge. The hamon is anexceptional Mino-style sanbonsugi gunomethat is present the length of the blade ending in a jizo boshi with some streaking kaen. The hamon is filledwith streaking sunagashi throughout its length.The blade is signed Noshuju Tashiro Kakubei. Tashiro Kakubei was the given name for the swordsmith Kanenobuworking in the mid-1600rsquos from Mino. He was one of the smiths that kept the famousMino tradition from the 1500rsquos going. It is likely the sword was signedKanenobu and that has been truncated as the nakago has been shortened. Kanenobuis ranked Chu Jo Saku by Fujishiro, but given the workmanship displayed here, I expect this sword was one of his better works.The mountings are the rarehigh end and early Type 94 ShinGunto and in Near MINTcondition. The tsuka is silk-cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. There is littleto no fraying. A blue and brown company grade officers tassel isattached to the tsuka. It is in Near MINT condition. The tsuba is classic WW2 with six accompanyingmetal seppa. The saya (scabbard) is higher class brown lacquered metal. It isin Near MINT condition showing one verysmall dent, and just a few scratches and areas of missing finish, retainingroughly 97-98 originalfinish. The furniture on the saya are in outstanding condition, including the extra hanger that has the ability to be unscrewedand taken off. The blade is in MINTYcondition. There are no nicks, little to no rust, and just a few scratchesalong the blades length. There are no major flaws like hagire.
