TWO VINTAGE MAGNAVOX MODEL 169 MONOBLOCK VACUUM TUBE AMPSFOR STEREO GREAT COKE BOTTLE TUBESI have had these two Magnavox 169 mono-block amps foryears. A few years ago, I refurbished theseamps. The amps are dead quiet and soundgreat. A preamp is highly recommendedfor volume and tone control. However, Idid play the amps with just a phone and without a preamp and the volume levelwas slightly lower. These amps are plugand play ready and sound great while putti...ng out about 10 to 12 watts perchannel.Here’s what I did when I refurbished the amp. I replaced the coupling caps with Mallory andSprague capacitors. I replaced out oftolerance resistors. I added a groundedpower cord, a slo blo fuse, an on/off switch, an on/off lamp, three-way speakerconnections for either bare wire, spade ends or banana plugs and rubberfeet. The filter can capacitor is stilloriginal to the amps and is still dead quiet as mentioned.The chassis are slightly different model 169 amps. But both amps use the same tubeconfiguration, one 5Y3GT, two 6V6GT power tubes in push-pull configuration anda 6AN8 preamp tube. I replaced the 5Y3 rectifierwith two US-made coke-bottle shaped 5V4 rectifiers. I used four coke-bottle shaped, 6V6G tube. All tested good. And there are two 6AN8 tubes that were NOSwhen I installed them in the front of these amps. All these tubes from the golden age of tubesfrom the mid-century era.
