This enlisted man of the 50th New York Infantry Regiment, which became the 50th New York Engineer Regiment on October 22, 1861, wears the uniform supplied to his regiment, possibly during its first few months of service. Note the numerals "50" attached to one side of the collar of his jacket which, judging by its nine-button front, full sleeves, and bottom edge, was most likely a converted frock coat.
His regiment lost 1 officer and 19 enlisted men killed or mort...ally wounded and 1 officer and 206 enlisted men to disease during the Civil War. The regiment left the State September 20, 1861, and servedas infantry at Washington, D. C., from September 22, 1861; in the 3rd Brigade, Fitz-John Porter's Division, from September 30, 1861; as engineers at Alexandria, Va., receiving instructions in engineering duties, from October 22, 1861; in theVolunteer Brigade of Engineers, Army of the Potomac, from March, 1862. A detachment also served for a time in 1863, in the 8thCorps, Middle Department, and Company I, with General Sheridan from February, 1865, to Appomattox Court House, Va.Commanded by Col. William H. Pettes, the regiment was honorably discharged andmustered out at Fort Berry, Va., June 13 and 14, 1865.
