- ...; Entered the Navy November 1819.
- Commanded the schooner Weazel in action against West Indies pirate in late 1820s.
- Promoted to lieutenant on May 17, 1828.
- Participated, a third in command of the U.S. Exploring Expedition 1838-42, commanding Porpoise.
- Carried out surveys of Antarctica, the South American coast, the Tuamotu Islands, Tonga, New Zealand and the Northwest Pacific coast of North America.
- Participated in punitive expedition against hostile Fijians in retaliation for capture and murder of seamen.
- Led a 60-man party exploring San Francisco Bay watershed in 1841.
- Promoted to Commander on July 16, 1849.
- Led definitive survey of San Francisco Bay region in 1849, commanding the chartered brig Col. Fremont. Afterward, helped choose the location for a dockyard for the Navy's Pacific station (later became Mare Island Navy Yard).
- Published "A Series of Charts with Sailing Directions" in 1851.
- Took command of 5 ships in the North Pacific Exploring and Surveying Expedition in 1853...with the Vincennes as his flagship. But, contracted malaria and was sent home in July 1854.
- Declared unfit for active service by board of naval doctors, was placed on the reserve list in 1855...returned to active duty 1858.
- At the beginning of the Civil War, commanded the frigate Sabine with the rank of Captain. On November 1, 1861, he effected the rescue of a battalion of 400 Marines whose transport (i.e., Governor) was sinking during a severe storm near Port Royal, SC.
- In February 1862, participated in the search and rescue of the ship of the line Vermont which had lost her rudder in a storm. For both rescues, he received commendations from the Maryland Legislature and the U.S. Congress, along with a gold medal from the Life Saving Benevolent Association.
- Promoted to Commodore July 16, 1862, and sent in Sabine to cruise the Azores, Cape Verde Islands and the coast of Brazil in search of Rebel commerce raiders.
- Retired, by reason of age, on August 20, 1864, and place on retired list with rank of Rear Admiral.
- Died of a stroke April 29, 1867.
Outstanding military portrait of naval officer with 45-year record of service and exploration! He was the brother of Major Samuel Ringgold of Mexican War fame.
The overall condition of this CW carte is very good, with only normal wear and soiling...bottom of mount very slightly trimmed. Please review all photos provided before bidding.
