UK Find - Rare Ancient Viking Axe Head - (Type I (Wheeler IV)
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:13336 |
This is the 2nd of 3 axe heads from the same area that are in my own collection.
This type of axe would not really have been used as cutting and slashing weapon, unlike the more lighter bearded axe heads that are ideal for that purpose. This is a heavy axe with a narrower cutting surface, ideal for striking and breaking through sh...ield and defense.
The artefact has been lightly cleaned to remove debris and rust, and retains its original patina. I have treated the artefact with British museum approved preserving microwax. See picture for condition.
Date:circa 11th century AD
Size:length apx 185mm
Investing in Ancient Artefacts.
Ancient artefacts are finite, less are being discovered as time passes, and of course at some point in the future there will be no more. The quantity and availability of these ancient historic pieces is ever decreasing as collectors and museums purchase these objects and take them permanently off the market. Consequently, investment in antiquities is rising. Of course there are few of us who can afford to bid millions on objects like the Guennol Lioness, but, as availability decreases across the whole spectrum of ancient artefacts, investment is proving to be provident and wise, and most of all, for the sheer pleasure of owning a piece of ancient history.
