Wonderful and quite rare, 1916 Typed Letter Signed by future President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as Acting Secretary of the Navy. This outstanding, hand signed Letter measures approx. 8” by 11 1/2” and is written on Roosevelt's Navy Department Stationary. The letter is dated March 31, 1916 and addressed to a “Hon. E. Lester Jones”. Ernest Lester Jones (1876-1929), was a hydrographic and geodetic engineer and Superintendent of the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. He was a regul...ar correspondent and personal friend of FDR. Jones's career is notable for his resolution of the boundary dispute between the United States and Canada, concerning Alaska.
The Letter is written entirely on one side of a sheet of stationary with printed heading at the top that reads "Navy Department / Washington". The signature of Franklin D. Roosevelt is dark and bold and beautiful as is the vast majority of the typewritten text.
The Letter was written by FDR as a reply to a request by Jones on behalf of the appointment of Reverend Truman P. Riddle as an Acting Chaplain in the U. S. Navy. The full text reads as follows:
”My dear Mr. Jones:
I am in receipt of your letter of March 27, 1916, and in reply wish to say that the Department has received an application from Rev. Truman P. Riddle for appointment as acting chaplain in the Navy.
At the present time there is no vacancy for a candidate from the Episcopal Church, but Rev. Mr. Riddle has been informed that his application is being retained on file, and in case an unexpected vacancy should occur through resignation, death or retirement on account of physical disability, his application shall receive careful consideration.

This original, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed is in very good condition. As stated above, the signature of Franklin D. Roosevelt is dark and bold and very attractive as is the majority typewritten text. The line of typewritten text below FDR’s signature has been altered, changing what was surely text that originally read “Assistant Secretary of the Navy” to text that reads “Acting Secretary of the Navy”. The Sheet is lightly and uniformly age toned and has two punch holes at the top edge as can be seen in the scans below. The Letter and the signature of FDR is very attractive and will make an outstanding display piece with a quality matting and framing.
