William Newlin Tisdale entered the service of the United States in 1861 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Infantry. He served at Fort Leavenworth in the spring of 1863, conveying public funds to Santa Fe. He saw action at Vicksburg, and in western Louisiana. After the war, and several stations, he arrived in Arizona in Dec. 1882, at Fort McDowell, then quickly sent to Fort Huachuca, AZ.With disturbances at Tombstone, AZ in August of 1884, between miners and cowboys, Tisdale was... ordered to take troops to assist the local authorities in preserving the peace. In 1886, the 1st Infantry was sent to California, and did service at the Benicia Barracks. One of his last assignments was in Pittsburg on recruiting duty, and in 1895, Tisdale retired as captain (1869).The image quality is very good; clipped corners.
