While it may be convenient for us to believe that innovative product design began a dozen years ago with the launch of the iPhone, the practice of fusing form with function actually goes back a bit further than that. There were the Great Pyramids, of course. They were around before the iPhone. And the abacus. That was invented before Apple even went public. And the Papal Basilica of St. Peter. I don't think Michelangelo even knew Steve Jobs. So yes, the trend has legs, as the...y say in the movie business. Which is why I get a bit giddy when I'm able to present a top shelf assortment of technical antiquity like I've got lined up for you this week. Here's an exquisitely crafted quarter-plate tailboard camera manufactured by Perken, Son & Rayment sometime in the late 1880's. Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, yet identical in fit and finish to the largest studio cameras, it's a marvel of miniaturization. Judging from its appearance, this was was probably one of the first -- if not the first -- cameras in the company's Optimus line. It was certainly among the best built, with both dovetail and butt joints, solid brass fittings and a highly polished wood finish (body appears to be either teak or Spanish mahogany).
The camera comes in its original canvas carrying case, and the lens (also original) comes with its original set of Waterhouse stops, which are in their own original carrying case. Also included are the camera's four original plate holders, and the proprietary slide into which they're fitted.
Condition is excellent. Original leather bellows are almost like new (see pictures); original ground glass back is clean and undamaged; original lens has no damage, no fungus. All of the plate holders work properly, and the slide that retains them moves easily in and out of the camera back. Rack and pinion focusing is working properly. Tarnish on the lens barrel and the lacquered brass fittings is consistent with age and authenticity. Manufacturer's tag is original and completely intact, and the printing is crisp and clear.
The camera folds up neatly and looks beautiful from any angle.
Carrying case is in good condition given its age and utility. Signs of wear, as you can see, and the strap is missing, but the fabric is sturdy and the stitching is secure.
Overall, an excellent, completely original, and eminently collectible 1/4 plate tailboard camera that has not been repaired, rebuilt, refinished or otherwise "glammed up."
