Unquestionably one of the most charming and rarest subjects of all of William Shayer's oeuvre. A sensitive and very unusual intimate figurative seaside oil featuring two tiny crabs. In the distance, a man and his dog walking along the beach to the left with the Cliffs of Southampton to the right.

William Shayer, Senior was born at Southampton and after spells at Guildford and Chichester had settled permanently in his native city by 1820. He is principally known for his Hampshire landscapes, seascapes, and animal painting, and his work is most closely associated with the New Forest. His work falls into two main categories: woodland scenes, populated with gypsies, animals and cheerful rustics and coastal scenes based around small boats, fishermen and their families.

The death of Shayer's first wife in 1823 left him with five children to raise and made establishing himself as an artist all the more difficult. He is known to have painted his own children and it is possible that the child in this intimate work is his child. He was helped by the establishment of the Society of British Artists (with whom he went on to exhibit 388 works) and the opening of the Hampshire Picture Gallery in Southampton in 1827 and by the end of the decade his career was beginning to flourish. He also exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and at the British Institution.

One of the most talented of all the mid 19th century British painters, he was highly prolific and examples of his work can be found in many museums including the Tate Gallery. His career was helped considerably by the patronage of Michael Hoy, a popular and wealthy Southampton merchant. His scenes of country life were amongst his most popular subjects with his Victorian patrons and remain so today.

NOTE; Work has not been cleaned: paint is strong and stable: no restorations: fine generalized craquelure: work was professionally laid down in the 19th century on a canvas support backing ( see photo of edge ): work is fully guaranteed and comes with a certificate of authenticity from a museum trained specialist and a Sotheby's Associate.
