Otherwise in fine condition.This land grant, for a parcel of land in what had been the Northwest T...erritory, was to John Franklin as assignee of Lewis Noel.Captain George Graham (1772 August 9, 1830) served as acting U.S. Secretary of War under two U.S. Presidential administrations from 1816 to 1817. Outside of his Cabinet service, he is best known for a mission to Galveston Island, Texas to persuade the small Bonapartist colony of Champ d'Asile to accept American jurisdiction. There he met with privateer Jean Laffite. This voyage is considered the first Anglo-American account of a sea voyage to Texas.1 Graham fell ill with acute dysentery on his return trip from Champ d'Asile, but was healed by Atakapa natives.2 He was president of the Washington branch of the Bank of the United States, 18191823, and commissioner of the U.S. land office, 1823 - 1830. Very rare and wonderful, 1820 Document Signed by James Monroe as President of the United States. This fantastic, hand signed document measures approx. 14 by 9 being a partially printed Ohio Land Grant transferring 160 Acres of land to one "William Diggs Jr". The Document is dated August 5th, 1820 and is issued to "William Diggs, Jr. of Wayne County". The land is identified as "the North East quarter of Section twenty-four in Township Twenty of Range thirteen East of the second principle meridia...n line containing one hundred and sixty acres. The document is printed on vellum and is boldly signed in brown ink James Monroe" at the lower right hand corner. This Land Grant was signed by President James Monroe himself and the signature is not a secretarial or proxy. It was not until the middle of the Andrew Jackson administration that the task of signing Land Grants was relegated to the Commissioner of the General Land Office and this James Monroe signature is 100, unconditionally guaranteed authentic and in the hand of the President himself. This very rare, Pres. James Monroe, Signed Document is in very good condition. The signature of Pres. Monroe is quite large and attractive although slightly faded. The document is printed on heavy vellum stock and exhibits the usual horizontal and vertical creases found on Land Grants of this period. The sheet is generally clean with some toning and foxing as well as darkening along the vertical creases as can be seen in the scans below. The Document retains the original affixed, embossed seal at the lower left hand corner. All of the manuscript entries are easily readable. Overall this is a well preserved example of a wonderful President James Monroe signed Document that displays beautifully.
