Design. The Dollar Obverse, designed by Don Evenhart features the former President’s portrait with inscriptions CHESTER ARTHUR, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST”, the 21th order of the Presidency, and the 1881-1885 years during which he served. The reverse carries a Don Everhart design common to all issues of the series depicting the statue of Liberty with inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “$1″. The edge of the coin includes the 2012, mint mark, and motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
President. Chester A. Arthur was born October 5, 1829, in North Fairfield, Vermont. Elected vice president on the Republican ticket of 1880, Arthur acceded to the presidency upon the assassination of President James A. Garfield. As president, he supported the Pendleton Civil Service Act (1883), which provided for the open appointment and promotion of federal employees based on merit rather than patronage.
