Anthurium Luxurians - Rare Form Of A Pebble Leaf Tropical Aroid, Not TC
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:1046429 |
One of the moststriking and desirable of all tropical aroids, Anthurium luxurians has a checkered history in cultivation. Earlyintroductions from Colombia were misidentified as... the quite different A. splendidum from the Pacific lowlandsof Colombia. The identity of the plants in cultivation in Hawaii and SouthFlorida was clarified in the description in 2005 (Croat & Cirino), which providessome background into the plant’s introduction into ornamental horticultural inthe early 1970s. The popularity and high price of the plant resulted in itbeing micro-propagated in fairly large numbers about 16-18 years back. Unfortunately, tissue-cultured plants appearto have been difficult to succeed with, and the plant has again become ratherrare in cultivation. My material came from a Colombian grower living inGuatemala in 1999. It is a magnificent plant, if quite slow-growing undercooler conditions. I have used it successfully in a couple hybrids, mostnotably with A. dressleri, to producea similar-looking plant that is faster growing. Part of an extremely limitedrelease of material grown from divisions of my stock plant.
